Gum Disease Is One Of The top reasons For Tooth Loss In Adults.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, often begins with gingivitis. This is the earliest stage of gum disease, when the gums may become red, swollen, and bleed easily. At this stage, it is usually mild and can often be reversed with consistent brushing, flossing, and regular professional cleanings. Because it is often painless in the beginning, many people do not realize they have it.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, a more advanced form of gum disease that affects the bone and supporting structures around the teeth. This can lead to gum recession, infection, bone loss, and permanent damage. Over time, teeth may become loose and may eventually need to be removed. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for protecting your oral health and preventing long-term complications.

During your regular checkups, your dental hygienist will perform a periodontal evaluation using a periodontal probe. This allows us to measure the space between your bone level and gums and check for signs of periodontal disease. These routine measurements help us catch problems early and recommend the right treatment to keep your gums and supporting bone as healthy as possible.
