Crowns are a cosmetic restoration used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. They are cemented onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion above the gum line, becoming the tooth’s new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are often preferred because they closely mimic the natural appearance of teeth and are very strong.
Crowns are recommended when there is not enough healthy tooth structure remaining to support a filling. Unlike fillings, which are placed directly in your mouth, a crown is created outside the mouth.
Same-day crowns are created using advanced digital technology right here in our office. We take a 3-D scan of your tooth, design your custom crown on a computer, and then a special in office machine precisely mills it from a ceramic block. This allows us to place your permanent crown in a single visit temporary crown or second appointment needed.
